Makakilo Hawaii is located in the second city of Kapolei. It is in the Ewa District in Honolulu County and is also known as Makakilo City. The word Makakilo means “Observing Eyes” in Hawaiian. Makakilo runs along the southern end of the slopes of the Waianae mountain range above the city of Kapolei. The Interstate H-1 freeway divides Kapolei from Makakilo, and traveling eastward on H-1 connects to Ewa Beach and Waipahu. The freeway ends about 1.5 miles west of Makakilo, merging into Farrington Highway to Kahe Point and then Nanakuli on the Waianae Coast. Exit 1 on H-1 is Kalaeloa Road, the entrance to Barbers Point and Campbell Industrial Park. Farther down is the exit to Koolina.
Traffic up and down Makakilo Drive can best be describe as good and bad. Going up Makakilo Drive during high traffic times can be frustrating as a majority of people going home are making a left turn without a left turn lane. This can block traffic and cause accidents. Going down Makakilo can be thrilling as people don’t go the speed limit down the hill.
